First and second birthdays are cake-smash territory: short sessions, morning light, a washable location like a beach, and parents nearby with wipes and a spare outfit. Ages three to six shine in adventure formats, where the shoot is disguised as a game and the photographer is just the funny grown-up with a camera. School-age kids often love being the star of a 'magazine shoot' — give them small missions and they deliver poses you couldn't direct if you tried. From around ten, involve them in planning: kids who chose the location and their outfit cooperate at triple the rate.
