School-age kids often love being the star of a 'magazine shoot' — give them small missions and they deliver poses you couldn't direct if you tried. From around ten, involve them in planning: kids who chose the location and their outfit cooperate at triple the rate. Kids-specialist photographers open sessions by not photographing at all: five minutes of showing the camera, letting the child press the shutter, becoming the least threatening adult present. Then the shoot becomes a game with rules the child controls — hide behind the wall and pop out, race me to that boat, show me your monster face. Shyness reads as delicacy in photos when nobody forces eye contact with the lens; some of the most beautiful kids' portraits are of a child absorbed in shell-collecting, unaware of the camera.
