Best time: Early morning, before the cruise groups come ashore

Lindos acropolis and St Paul's Bay
An ancient sanctuary on a rock above a white cubist village, with a closed blue horseshoe of a bay below — two of the island's best frames in one climb.
Best time: Morning for the climb and the down-look; late afternoon at the bay
The village lanes are marble-slick and the climb is real — flat shoes, water. The famous bay view is from the acropolis rim, not the beach.
Anthony Quinn Bay from the eastern rocks
A narrow cove of dark rock and improbably clear turquoise below Faliraki, named after the actor who bought the headland — the frames are on the rock ledges, not the pebbles.
Best time: Early morning — the cove faces north-east, lights up first and empties last
The pebble beach is under sunbeds by ten; the eastern rock ledges are the working ground. Wet rock is slippery — grip soles, and keep a step back from the drop.
Mandraki mole — the windmills and the deer columns at dusk
Three medieval windmills in a line along the harbour mole, a fort at the end and the bronze deer on their columns at the entrance — a walk that composes itself.
Best time: Late afternoon into blue hour, once the mills and the fort are lit
Walk out from the old town rather than driving — parking at Mandraki is scarce. On a northerly wind the seaward side of the mole takes spray.
