Lindos acropolis and St Paul's Bay
An ancient sanctuary on a rock above a white cubist village, with a closed blue horseshoe of a bay below — two of the island's best frames in one climb.
About Lindos acropolis and St Paul's Bay
Get directionsLindos stacks three photographs on top of each other: the white village of flat-roofed captains' houses, the Hellenistic sanctuary columns on the acropolis rock above it, and — looking down the far side — St Paul's Bay, an almost perfectly enclosed ring of turquoise with a tiny white chapel at its edge.
Climb early. The path up through the village is donkey-width and fills by ten; at eight the lanes are empty, the light is kind, and the acropolis at opening time belongs to the first dozen visitors. From the top, the columns frame the sea in one direction and the bay's full horseshoe in the other — the down-look at St Paul's Bay is the island's most repeated frame for a reason.
The chapel at the bay hosts real weddings through the season; for photography the bay works best from above in the morning and at water level in the late afternoon, when the cliffs shade the beach and the water holds the light. Between village, acropolis and bay this is a half-day, not an hour.
Best time to shoot
Morning for the climb and the down-look; late afternoon at the bay
Tips
The village lanes are marble-slick and the climb is real — flat shoes, water. The famous bay view is from the acropolis rim, not the beach.

Street of the Knights and the old town
A straight medieval street of stone inns rising to the Grand Master's Palace — the best-preserved crusader townscape anywhere, and lanes beyond it with no cars at all.

A narrow cove of dark rock and improbably clear turquoise below Faliraki, named after the actor who bought the headland — the frames are on the rock ledges, not the pebbles.

Three medieval windmills in a line along the harbour mole, a fort at the end and the bronze deer on their columns at the entrance — a walk that composes itself.
