Street of the Knights and the old town
A straight medieval street of stone inns rising to the Grand Master's Palace — the best-preserved crusader townscape anywhere, and lanes beyond it with no cars at all.
About Street of the Knights and the old town
Get directionsThe Street of the Knights runs straight and slightly uphill for two hundred metres, walled on both sides by the 14th-century inns of the crusader tongues, ending at the Palace of the Grand Master. No shopfronts, no signage, hardly a modern surface — stand in the middle at the right hour and the photograph could be any century.
The right hour is early. By mid-morning in season the street carries a continuous file of cruise groups; at eight it is stone, arches and shadow. The low sun enters almost along the street's axis, raking the cobbles and lighting faces from the side — walk-towards-camera frames work all the way up.
Give the rest of the session to the old town around it: the arched lanes off Sokratous, the gates through the massive walls, the dry moat walk below them — a green corridor between sheer stone that almost nobody photographs. Cats are a guaranteed supporting cast.
Best time to shoot
Early morning, before the cruise groups come ashore
Tips
Check the cruise schedule — a port day changes everything. The dry moat below the walls is the crowd-free second location.

I simply cannot recommend this man enough. My wife and I had a four-hour shoot booked for our honeymoon and we ended up being out and about for nigh on six or seven — we didn't feel rushed or uncomfortable in the slightest. If Vas wasn't…

Photography has always been something very important in our lives. Without it, we wouldn't be able to recall the details of our treasured memories. That's why when we had to choose a photographer for our baby girl's christening, we knew we…

Lindos acropolis and St Paul's Bay
An ancient sanctuary on a rock above a white cubist village, with a closed blue horseshoe of a bay below — two of the island's best frames in one climb.
Anthony Quinn Bay from the eastern rocks
A narrow cove of dark rock and improbably clear turquoise below Faliraki, named after the actor who bought the headland — the frames are on the rock ledges, not the pebbles.
Mandraki mole — the windmills and the deer columns at dusk
Three medieval windmills in a line along the harbour mole, a fort at the end and the bronze deer on their columns at the entrance — a walk that composes itself.
