Areopagus Rock below the Acropolis
A bare marble outcrop with the Parthenon filling the frame behind you — the closest thing Athens has to a natural studio, and open all night.
About Areopagus Rock below the Acropolis
Get directionsThe Areopagus is a low marble hill directly under the Acropolis entrance, worn glassy by two and a half thousand years of feet. From its top the Parthenon and the Propylaea stack up behind you at a flattering diagonal, close enough to dominate the frame without a long lens, and in the other direction the whole city runs out to the sea.
First light is the honest advice: the marble goes pale gold, the Acropolis above is lit before the city wakes, and you share the rock with a handful of photographers rather than the evening crowd that gathers for sunset with speakers and beer. Sunset is still worth it for the view over Athens — just expect company in the wide shots.
One practical warning: the marble is genuinely slippery, polished smooth even when dry. Flat shoes with grip, and take the modern metal staircase rather than the carved steps. The rock is free and always open, which also makes it one of the few Acropolis-view spots that work for a dawn proposal.
Best time to shoot
First light, before the Acropolis opens and the city wakes
Tips
The marble is polished slippery — flat shoes, and use the metal stairs. For sunset frames, arrive early to claim the west edge before the crowd settles in.

At first I didn't even want professional wedding photos — I don't think I'm especially photogenic, and I wondered how different they could really be from the shots on relatives' and friends' smartphones. In the end, having chosen Kostas,…
