About Zagori & the Vikos Gorge

Zagori is a cluster of forty-six villages built entirely out of grey slate and limestone — flagged squares, arcaded houses, roofs laid like fish scales — spread across the mountains north of Ioannina. The Vikos gorge cuts through the middle of it, around 900 metres deep where the walls are highest, and the two viewpoints that matter are Oxya, a short drive above Monodendri, and the Beloi balcony, reached on foot from Vradeto. Papingo, under the bare rock towers of Astraka, is the village most people picture: stone lanes, plane trees and cliffs that turn apricot in the last hour. Lower down at Kipoi, the eighteenth-century packhorse bridges — the three-arched Plakida, also called Kalogeriko, and the single-arched Kokkoris — stand under limestone walls and are among the most photographed structures in Greece. The Voidomatis, one of the coldest and clearest rivers in Europe, runs out of the gorge past the old bridge below Aristi.

Top Photo Spots in Zagori & the Vikos Gorge

The most photogenic locations for your Zagori & the Vikos Gorge photoshoot

The Oxya viewpoint over the Vikos gorge

A railed rock platform on the rim of the Vikos gorge, with limestone walls dropping several hundred metres to a river bed you can barely see.

Best time: First light, when mist still sits on the gorge floor and the eastern wall is lit

A few minutes of level walking from the car park, so it suits most people. The rim is exposed and windy — keep well back from unrailed edges and think twice about long dresses or veils.

Megalo Papingo under the Astraka towers

A village of grey slate houses at the foot of two vertical limestone towers, with cobbled lanes, plane trees and no through traffic.

Best time: The last hour of daylight, when the Astraka towers turn apricot above a village already in shadow

Everything is grey stone, so a strong solid colour reads far better than white or beige. Lanes are cobbled and uneven. The village is small and fills at weekends — midweek is another place.

The arched bridges at Kipoi

Eighteenth-century packhorse bridges under limestone cliffs — the three arches of the Kalogeriko and the single high span of the Kokkoris.

Best time: Late afternoon, when warm light hits the stone and the ravine keeps the contrast down

Both bridges are a few metres from the road, so no walking is involved. The decks are humped, cobbled and slippery when wet. In spring the river is full and reflects; by late summer it can be dry.

The Voidomatis at the Aristi bridge

One of the clearest rivers in Europe running out of the gorge under an old stone bridge, cold and green over white pebbles.

Best time: Morning, while the water is still in shade and the trees above it are lit

The water is only a few degrees even in August — plan for a foot in it, not a swim. Round pebbles roll underfoot on the bank. Spring flow can cover the shoals entirely.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a photoshoot in Zagori cost?

Sessions in Zagori start from €279, and one- to two-hour packages run to about €450 depending on length and the number of edited photos. The villages sit ten to forty minutes apart on mountain roads, so booking two hours rather than one is usually what makes a gorge viewpoint plus a stone bridge plus a village possible in a single session.

What are the best photo spots in Zagori?

The Oxya viewpoint over the Vikos gorge, and the Beloi balcony above Vradeto for the same gorge from the other side. Papingo, under the bare rock towers of Astraka, for stone lanes and plane trees. The eighteenth-century packhorse bridges at Kipoi — the three-arched Kalogeriko and the single-arched Kokkoris. And the Voidomatis, clear and green, at the old bridge below Aristi.

When is the best time of day and year in Zagori?

Early morning for the gorge, when mist still sits on the floor and the eastern wall is lit; late afternoon for the villages and bridges, when the grey stone turns warm. May, June, September and October are the best months — wildflowers and full rivers in spring, colour in autumn. Winter is beautiful but roads and footpaths can be icy.

How hard is it to reach the Vikos gorge viewpoints?

Oxya is a short drive from Monodendri and then a level walk of a few minutes, so it works for most people and for family sessions. Beloi needs about forty minutes on foot from Vradeto on a rocky path, with no railing at the edge. The gorge floor itself is a full-day hike, not a photoshoot. Check the forecast — both viewpoints are exposed.

Is the studio rental included in the price?

It depends on the photographer, and their Photo Greece profile states it explicitly — read the package description before booking. Photographers with their own studios include the space in the session price; those who rent third-party studios either build the cost in or list it as a separate line so you can choose the space tier. When comparing prices, compare the whole package: a session that looks €50 cheaper but adds studio rental on top isn't cheaper. If a quote is ambiguous, ask directly in the booking chat — 'is the studio included, and which studio is it?' — and you'll get a concrete answer with photos of the space. Address and access details arrive with your booking confirmation.

How many outfit changes are included?

The practical limit is time, not a rule: in a 60-minute studio session, two to three outfits is the sweet spot — each change costs five minutes plus a lighting adjustment, and more changes than that eat into actual shooting. For headshot sessions, bring three tops in different tones against the planned backdrop and change only from the waist up in seconds. Portfolio and branding sessions that genuinely need four or more looks should book 90 minutes or two hours; your photographer will say so honestly when you describe the goal. Studio tip: bring everything pressed and on hangers, arrive in the simplest look, and start with it — the first fifteen minutes are warm-up frames anyway, and your strongest outfit deserves your warmed-up confidence.
