in Zagori & the Vikos Gorge

Sessions in Zagori start from €279, and one- to two-hour packages run to about €450 depending on length and the number of edited photos. The villages sit ten to forty minutes apart on mountain roads, so booking two hours rather than one is usually what makes a gorge viewpoint plus a stone bridge plus a village possible in a single session.

The Oxya viewpoint over the Vikos gorge, and the Beloi balcony above Vradeto for the same gorge from the other side. Papingo, under the bare rock towers of Astraka, for stone lanes and plane trees. The eighteenth-century packhorse bridges at Kipoi — the three-arched Kalogeriko and the single-arched Kokkoris. And the Voidomatis, clear and green, at the old bridge below Aristi.

Early morning for the gorge, when mist still sits on the floor and the eastern wall is lit; late afternoon for the villages and bridges, when the grey stone turns warm. May, June, September and October are the best months — wildflowers and full rivers in spring, colour in autumn. Winter is beautiful but roads and footpaths can be icy.

Oxya is a short drive from Monodendri and then a level walk of a few minutes, so it works for most people and for family sessions. Beloi needs about forty minutes on foot from Vradeto on a rocky path, with no railing at the edge. The gorge floor itself is a full-day hike, not a photoshoot. Check the forecast — both viewpoints are exposed.

Every age works — the format just adapts. First and second birthdays are cake-smash territory: short sessions, morning light, a washable location like a beach, and parents nearby with wipes and a spare outfit. Ages three to six shine in adventure formats, where the shoot is disguised as a game and the photographer is just the funny grown-up with a camera. School-age kids often love being the star of a 'magazine shoot' — give them small missions and they deliver poses you couldn't direct if you tried. From around ten, involve them in planning: kids who chose the location and their outfit cooperate at triple the rate. Whatever the age, schedule around meals and naps, and tell your Photo Greece photographer about your child's current obsessions — a dinosaur fan photographs differently from a mermaid expert.

Then the photographer stops asking for poses — that's the entire trick. Kids-specialist photographers open sessions by not photographing at all: five minutes of showing the camera, letting the child press the shutter, becoming the least threatening adult present. Then the shoot becomes a game with rules the child controls — hide behind the wall and pop out, race me to that boat, show me your monster face. Shyness reads as delicacy in photos when nobody forces eye contact with the lens; some of the most beautiful kids' portraits are of a child absorbed in shell-collecting, unaware of the camera. Parents help most by being relaxed themselves and letting the photographer set the rhythm. The 'won't pose' kid usually refuses to leave when the session ends.
