The Voidomatis at the Aristi bridge

The Voidomatis rises inside the Vikos gorge and comes out below Aristi, and the water is startling: so clear that the stones on the bed are sharp from the bank, and green rather than blue because of the limestone. This is where the rafting boats put in, and where the old arched bridge crosses on the road up to Papingo.

The bridge gives the classic frame — a stone arch, plane trees leaning over the water, and the reflection of both when the surface is still. Downstream from it, the bank flattens into pebble shoals that you can walk out onto, which puts you in the middle of the river with woods on both sides and no built structure in the picture at all.

Morning is the time. The valley is narrow, so the sun arrives late and leaves early, and in the first hours the water sits in shade while the trees above are lit — that difference is what makes the green read. Later, direct sun on the surface blows out the reflections.

The river is cold all year, around five to seven degrees even in August, so wading is a short-lived idea. The stones on the bank are round and roll underfoot. In spring the flow is high and fast and the shoals disappear; late summer and autumn give the calmest, clearest water.
