Best time: Sunrise, when the east-facing walls and the chapel light up and the village is still empty
Cars stop outside the walls — the last stretch is on foot. The path down to the chapel is worn stone, so flat shoes with grip. Late afternoon still works: the chapel is in shade, but the lanes are at their softest.
The Steno lane through Apollonia
The island's one pedestrian street: a narrow marble-paved lane climbing between whitewashed walls, bougainvillea and open doorways.
Best time: Early evening, as the lamps come on and the lane fills with people walking
The pavement is polished stone and slopes — no heels. Deliveries use the lane before nine, so shoot after that or very early. If you want it empty, the parallel side alleys hold the same light and almost nobody.

Ask before photographing anyone at a wheel — these are working studios, not a display. The shallows go out a long way, which is ideal for children. Parking is limited in August; go before six or leave the car at the top and walk down.

Best time: First light, before the swimmers reach Apokofto beach next door
Park at Apokofto and walk five minutes. It is a working monastery: modest dress, no tripods in the doorway, and check opening times if you want the courtyard. The rocks either side are sharp — the bridge and the paved paths are the safe ground.
