Pylos harbour and the Three Admirals square

Pylos was rebuilt by French engineers after 1828 and it shows: the town steps down to the water in even terraces, and its centre is a single square, Trion Navarchon, shaded by plane trees so old they close over it completely. Arcades run along two sides, a monument to the admirals of Navarino stands in the middle, and the harbour is fifty metres below.

The square is the portrait location — full shade at any hour, warm bounced light off the stone, and a background of arches that does not date. Down at the harbour the fishing boats and the long quay give an open, brighter alternative, with the island of Sfaktiria closing the bay. Above the town, the Neokastro fortress is a large, quiet site of walls, a church and a courtyard, with a small admission and set opening hours.

Late afternoon and early evening are best: the plane trees are backlit, the arcades glow, and the town comes out to walk. The bay faces north-west, so the water takes colour late. Parking around the square is tight — use the harbour front. If you want the fortress, check its opening hours first, as it closes earlier than the light does.
