Stone lanes around a Byzantine cathedral, climbing to a small Frankish castle with the Messenian gulf on one side and Taygetos on the other.
Best time: Late afternoon, when the stone warms and Taygetos goes blue behind the castle

Voidokilia beach from the dunes
A near-perfect circle of white sand between a lagoon and the open Ionian, with no building, bar or sunbed anywhere on it.
Best time: The hour before sunset, from the ridge path — the bay faces west and holds colour after the sun goes
Stay on the boardwalks: the dunes are protected and fragile. Nothing is sold here — bring water, and expect no shade at all. Ten minutes up the castle path is enough for the classic frame; the full climb is thirty minutes over loose rock.

A Frankish ruin on a limestone headland, reached by a rough climb, with Voidokilia directly below and the Ionian all round.
Best time: Early morning or the two hours before sunset — the ridge is fully exposed at midday
Thirty minutes up over loose rock and cut steps: proper shoes, and not in flip-flops. No shade and no water on the climb. Check locally whether any section is closed after rockfall, and turn back if the wind is strong — the walls are unfenced.
Pylos harbour and the Three Admirals square
An arcaded square of huge plane trees above a working harbour, with a Venetian-Ottoman fortress on the headland behind it.
Best time: Late afternoon into early evening, when the plane trees backlight and the town comes out
The square is deep shade all day — good for portraits, hard for wide shots with sky. Neokastro has an entrance fee and closes before sunset, so check the hours. Park along the harbour rather than in the square.
