About Symi

Symi is a harbour shaped like an amphitheatre. Gialos, the port, is ringed by tiers of neoclassical mansions in ochre, terracotta and washed blue, put up on sponge-diving and shipbuilding money in the nineteenth century and protected as a listed settlement since; from the deck of the arriving boat the whole town fits in one frame. Behind the quay the Kali Strata climbs roughly five hundred broad stone steps to Chorio, the older village along the ridge, past ruined shells and restored carved doorways, and the view back down the stairway is the island's best-known picture. The clocktower marks the harbour mouth, Nimborios is a clear-water bay half an hour's walk north-west, and the monastery of the Archangel Michael at Panormitis, a winding drive across the island, keeps a pebble-mosaic courtyard under a tall bell tower. Day boats from Rhodes fill the quay from late morning to mid-afternoon; before and after that Symi belongs to the people who live there.

Top Photo Spots in Symi

The most photogenic locations for your Symi photoshoot

The Gialos harbour amphitheatre

Tiers of ochre, cream and washed-blue mansions curving round a small working port, with fishing boats along the quay and no gap in the wall of colour.

Best time: Before the first day boat from Rhodes, or the hour before sunset

The quay is a public road for scooters and delivery trolleys — keep the group tight and out of the through line. Midday sun burns the pale facades; work the ends of the day.

The Kali Strata to Chorio

A broad stone stairway of roughly five hundred steps climbing from the port to the old village, past carved doorways and roofless mansions.

Best time: Early morning in shade, or late afternoon when the west wall lights up

Roughly five hundred uneven steps — flat shoes, and allow fifteen minutes each way. People live behind those doors: keep noise down and do not block the stair.

Panormitis monastery

A white monastery courtyard laid in black-and-white pebble mosaic, under a tall carved bell tower, at the head of a quiet southern bay.

Best time: Early morning or late afternoon, between the excursion boats

Active monastery and pilgrimage site: modest dress, no photography inside the church, and check ahead for anything beyond a small session in the courtyard. Around forty minutes by road from Gialos, so plan the travel.

Nimborios bay

A small clear-water bay half an hour's walk north-west of the port, with flat rock, a few tamarisks and no crowd.

Best time: Late afternoon, when low light crosses the bay and the rock warms

About thirty minutes on foot from Gialos along the coast track, no shade for most of it — take water and change at the bay. Windy in a north meltemi.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a photoshoot in Symi cost?

Professional photoshoots on Symi start from €279. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos — a one to two hour session, roughly €279 to €450, is enough to work the Gialos waterfront, climb part of the Kali Strata and finish in Chorio. Adding Panormitis or Nimborios means travel time across the island, so book a longer slot.

What are the best photo spots in Symi?

The Gialos waterfront, where the ochre and blue mansions stack up behind the fishing boats; the Kali Strata stairway with its carved doorways and ruined shells; the clocktower at the harbour mouth; the lanes and ridge of Chorio above; the pebble-mosaic courtyard at Panormitis; and Nimborios bay, half an hour's walk north-west, for clear water away from the quay.

What is the best time of day for photos in Symi?

Early morning or the last hour of light. The harbour opens to the north-east, so it takes clean early sun and the day boats from Rhodes have not landed yet; between about eleven and three the quay is at its busiest. Late afternoon lights the western tier of houses and the Kali Strata. May, June, September and October are far kinder than the August heat.

Are there rules about photographing at Panormitis monastery?

Panormitis is an active monastery and a busy pilgrimage site, so treat it as a church rather than a backdrop: shoulders and knees covered, and check with the monastery before anything beyond a small session in the open courtyard — photography inside the church is not permitted. Getting there is a winding drive across the island or an excursion boat, so allow the travel time in your booking.

I'm shy in front of the camera — will I look awkward?

This is the single most common worry, and it disappears about ten minutes in. Our photographers work with movement-based direction rather than stiff posing: walk towards me along this lane, look back over your shoulder, fix your hair, laugh at how ridiculous that instruction sounds. Motion photographs as confidence. Nobody is asked to smoulder at the lens unprompted. Locations help too — early-morning slots mean fewer bystanders, and quiet corners of Plaka or Ano Poli feel private. Read the reviews on any Photo Greece photographer profile and you'll notice how often 'I was so nervous' ends with 'best photos of my life'.

How many photos will I receive?

A standard 60-minute session delivers 40-60+ professionally edited photos; longer sessions deliver proportionally more. Every image in your gallery is individually edited — color, light, skin tones — not a raw dump with three good frames hidden inside. Expect real variety from a single hour: wide shots that show off the location, walking shots, close portraits, and detail moments you didn't notice being taken. Delivery lands in a private online gallery, typically within days, ready to download in full resolution and share. Each photographer's exact photo count and turnaround time is listed on their Photo Greece profile, so you know before you book.
