The harbour opens to the north-east, so it takes clean early sun and the day boats from Rhodes have not landed yet; between about eleven and three the quay is at its busiest. Late afternoon lights the western tier of houses and the Kali Strata. May, June, September and October are far kinder than the August heat.

Panormitis is an active monastery and a busy pilgrimage site, so treat it as a church rather than a backdrop: shoulders and knees covered, and check with the monastery before anything beyond a small session in the open courtyard — photography inside the church is not permitted. Getting there is a winding drive across the island or an excursion boat, so allow the travel time in your booking.
