About Chios

Chios is a big island that almost no tour group reaches, and its south is unlike anywhere else in Greece. The houses of Pyrgi are covered from doorstep to roofline in xysta — grey-and-white geometric patterns scraped into the plaster — so the whole village reads as one enormous pattern, and the small square in front of Agioi Apostoloi is its tightest, best-lit corner. Mesta, twenty minutes west, was built as a fortress against pirates: no windows on the outside, a ring of houses forming the wall, and dim vaulted passages between them that work in the middle of the day, when the rest of the island is too bright. Anavatos, in the hills above the west coast, is a nearly empty stone village stacked on a cliff, and its ruins hold warm light long after the beaches have gone flat. On the south coast, Mavra Volia at Emporios is a beach of black volcanic pebbles under red rock — the strongest colour on Chios. Inland, the eleventh-century monastery of Nea Moni is a UNESCO site, and its courtyard and cypress alley are the parts you can photograph.

Top Photo Spots in Chios

The most photogenic locations for your Chios photoshoot

Pyrgi's painted square

Every wall in the village is scratched over in grey and white geometry, and the little square in front of Agioi Apostoloi is the densest corner of it.

Best time: Early morning or the last two hours of daylight, when side light lifts the scratched relief off the walls

Wear one strong solid colour — the grey-and-white pattern swallows prints and pastels. Midday flattens the relief; overcast light works better than it sounds. It is a lived-in village, so keep doorways clear.

The vaulted lanes of Mesta

A medieval village built as its own fortress — no outer windows, one gate, and dim stone tunnels running between the houses.

Best time: Midday and early afternoon, when the vaulted lanes are the coolest and best-lit place on the island

One of the few Greek spots that works in the middle of the day. Light inside the vaults is low — slow movement helps. Cars stay outside the village, and the lanes are narrow, so don't block a passage.

The ruins of Anavatos

A grey stone village stacked up a three-hundred-metre cliff and almost entirely abandoned — stairs, doorways and walls with the sky behind them.

Best time: Last light, when low sun models the stacked walls and separates one level from the next

Uneven stairs, unguarded edges and a real cliff at the top — sensible shoes and no distraction near the drop. Sections of the village open and close with conservation work; check on arrival.

Mavra Volia, the black beach at Emporios

A bay of polished black volcanic pebbles under red-brown cliffs, with water that goes dark blue two steps from the shore.

Best time: Early morning or late afternoon — the dark stones get very hot and midday flattens the colour

The pebbles are large and get seriously hot in summer, so wear something on your feet. Almost no shade. The far coves are quieter than the first, which has a canteen and sunbeds.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a photoshoot in Chios cost?

Photoshoots on Chios start from €279, with one- and two-hour packages up to roughly €450 depending on duration and the number of edited images. The mastic villages are around forty minutes from Chios town, so the longer package is usually the sensible one — it pays for the drive and still leaves time for two villages rather than one.

What are the best photo spots on Chios?

Pyrgi, where every wall is covered in grey and white xysta patterns and the square in front of Agioi Apostoloi is the tightest frame on the island. Mesta's vaulted passages, which stay usable in the middle of the day. Anavatos, the near-empty stone village stacked on a cliff. And Mavra Volia at Emporios, black volcanic pebbles under red rock.

What is the best time of day and season on Chios?

Early morning and the last two hours of daylight for Pyrgi and Anavatos, when low sun brings out the relief in the plaster and the stone. Mesta's covered lanes are the exception and work all day. May, June, September and October are the best months; July and August are hot, and the north wind can be strong on the coast.

How do I get to Chios, and can I photograph inside Nea Moni?

Chios has flights from Athens and Thessaloniki and overnight ferries from Piraeus, so most people plan around one arrival rather than a day trip. Nea Moni is a working monastery and a UNESCO site: the courtyard and the cypress alley are the parts to shoot, modest dress is expected, and photography inside the church is usually not allowed — check on the day.

What if my kids won't cooperate during the photoshoot?

This happens all the time, and our family photographers are prepared for it. The secret is that the best family photos don't come from asking kids to pose — they come from play. Your photographer will turn the session into a game: racing along the beach at Naxos, feeding pigeons in Athens, hunting for cats in Chania's old harbour lanes. Tantrums and shy phases get waited out with a break and a snack, and sessions are scheduled around naps and meals. Even a session that feels chaotic in the moment produces wonderful genuine images — often better than the ones where everyone behaved.

What's the best age for a family photoshoot?

There's no wrong age — each stage photographs differently and beautifully. Babies bring quiet, tender close-ups; toddlers bring motion and hilarious candid moments; school-age kids love the adventure of exploring castles and beaches on camera; teens relax once they realise nobody is forcing stiff poses. Multi-generation shoots with grandparents are among the most treasured bookings we see, especially on family reunion trips to the islands. The one practical tip: with children under five, book morning sessions when energy and light are both at their best. Your Photo Greece photographer adapts the pace and games to the ages in your group.
