About Lesvos
Lesvos is the third-largest Greek island and it changes completely as you cross it. The north is the postcard: Molyvos climbs a cone of rock under a Genoese castle in tight lanes of grey stone and terracotta roofs, wisteria strung over the main street and a small fishing harbour below. Petra, ten minutes south, has a rock in the middle of the village with a church on top — a hundred-odd steps up to Panagia Glykofilousa and a view across the bay to Molyvos. The west is another country: bare, volcanic and windswept, with the petrified forest near Sigri, where trunks around twenty million years old stand where they fell, and Skala Eressos, a long dark-sand beach that faces west and takes the island's best sunsets. In the south, Plomari's lanes drop steeply to the water and the whole town smells of aniseed. Distances are real here — plan one corner of the island per session rather than three.

Top Photo Spots in Lesvos
The most photogenic locations for your Lesvos photoshoot
Molyvos castle and the hillside village
Lanes of grey stone and terracotta roofs climbing a cone of rock to a Genoese castle, with a fishing harbour at the bottom.
Best time: Late afternoon, when the sun comes off the sea onto the west-facing hill and the roofs go bright
The village is a hill of polished cobbles — flat shoes, and allow time to climb. The wisteria-covered main lane is the one place that works at midday. The castle has its own hours and ticket; check before building the schedule around it.
The rock chapel at Petra
A single block of rock in the middle of a seaside village, with a whitewashed chapel on top and a stone stairway climbing its flank.
Best time: Late afternoon, when light off the sea warms both the rock and the whitewashed terrace
Around a hundred uneven steps to the top, with a handrail for most of them. It is a working church — dress modestly and check whether you may photograph inside. The terrace at the top is small.
Skala Eressos beach at sunset
Three kilometres of dark volcanic sand facing due west, with a small island offshore and the best sunset on Lesvos.
Best time: The last half hour before sunset, and the fifteen minutes after — it faces almost due west
Check the wind: the west of Lesvos is exposed and afternoon gusts are common. Walk five minutes west of the village for empty sand. Dark sand holds colour well, so it forgives a late, low exposure.
The petrified forest near Sigri
Fossil tree trunks standing where they fell twenty million years ago, on bare volcanic hills with nothing else in the frame.
Best time: The first or last two hours of daylight, when long shadows model the ground and the heat drops
No shade, constant wind and a long drive from the north of the island — take water and check opening hours before setting out. Stay on the marked paths; the trunks are protected and must not be touched.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a photoshoot in Lesvos cost?
Photoshoots on Lesvos start from €279, and one- to two-hour packages run to about €450 depending on duration and how many edited photos you want. The island is large and the good backdrops cluster in the north and west, so agree the area first — the price covers the session, not a day-long tour of the island.
What are the best photo spots in Lesvos?
Molyvos, where stone lanes and terracotta roofs climb to a Genoese castle above the sea; Petra, with a rock in the middle of the village and the chapel of Panagia Glykofilousa on top; the petrified forest near Sigri, where fossil trunks stand where they fell; and Skala Eressos, a long west-facing beach of dark sand. Plomari's steep lanes are the quieter option in the south.
When is the light best in Lesvos?
Late afternoon in Molyvos and Petra, when low sun comes off the sea and lights the castle rock; sunset at Skala Eressos, which faces west. Midday is harsh everywhere except under the wisteria over Molyvos's main lane. May, June, September and October are the best months; August is hot, and the west of the island can be very windy year-round.
How far apart are the sights on Lesvos?
Further than the map suggests. Mytilene to Molyvos is about an hour and a half, and Sigri or Skala Eressos another hour and a half beyond that on slow roads. Pick one corner of the island per session. Ferries from Piraeus take a night and flights come from Athens and Thessaloniki — check schedules early, they thin out outside summer.
What if my kids won't cooperate during the photoshoot?
This happens all the time, and our family photographers are prepared for it. The secret is that the best family photos don't come from asking kids to pose — they come from play. Your photographer will turn the session into a game: racing along the beach at Naxos, feeding pigeons in Athens, hunting for cats in Chania's old harbour lanes. Tantrums and shy phases get waited out with a break and a snack, and sessions are scheduled around naps and meals. Even a session that feels chaotic in the moment produces wonderful genuine images — often better than the ones where everyone behaved.
What's the best age for a family photoshoot?
There's no wrong age — each stage photographs differently and beautifully. Babies bring quiet, tender close-ups; toddlers bring motion and hilarious candid moments; school-age kids love the adventure of exploring castles and beaches on camera; teens relax once they realise nobody is forcing stiff poses. Multi-generation shoots with grandparents are among the most treasured bookings we see, especially on family reunion trips to the islands. The one practical tip: with children under five, book morning sessions when energy and light are both at their best. Your Photo Greece photographer adapts the pace and games to the ages in your group.
