Nea Paralia and the Umbrellas
Five kilometres of open waterfront ending at Zongolopoulos's steel Umbrellas — sea, sky and clean modern lines, with Olympus across the gulf on clear days.
About Nea Paralia and the Umbrellas
Get directionsThessaloniki's Nea Paralia is the renovated waterfront that runs from the White Tower south along the Thermaic Gulf: a wide, unbroken promenade at sea level, punctuated by themed gardens and, most famously, George Zongolopoulos's Umbrellas — a cluster of steel umbrellas floating on slanted poles that has become the city's modern emblem. The sculpture gives graphic, uncluttered frames rare in Greek cities: metal lines, open water, and nothing else in the composition unless you put it there.
Sunset is the promenade's show. The waterfront faces west across the gulf, the sun goes down over the water, and on clear days — most reliably in winter and after rain — Mount Olympus itself stands on the far shore. Blue hour follows well: the Umbrellas are lit, and the wet-look paving reflects them.
The honest constraint is that the promenade is the city's living room — runners, cyclists, dog-walkers and teenagers in a constant stream from afternoon onward. Either embrace the movement as blurred life around a still couple, or come at dawn, when the walkway is empty, the water is flat, and the sculpture belongs to whoever showed up. The White Tower end connects the session to the old waterfront cafés for a finish.
Best time to shoot
Sunset and blue hour; dawn for an empty promenade
Tips
Clear days after rain put Mount Olympus across the gulf — check visibility before promising it. From afternoon on, the crowd is constant: use the motion or come at dawn.
