Aristotelous Square arcades at blue hour

Aristotelous is the centrepiece of the plan drawn up after the fire of 1917, when Thessaloniki was rebuilt as a modern city: a broad axis running from the seafront up to the Roman Agora, lined with arcaded facades in ochre and cream, curving where it meets the water. It is unusual in Greece for being deliberately monumental rather than accumulated, and for staying busy from breakfast until well after midnight.

For photography it offers two very different things in one place. Under the arcades there is deep even shade, repeating arches and warm reflected light — a covered studio that works at any hour and in rain. Out in the square there is symmetry: the couple centred on the axis with the facades converging behind them and the sea closing the frame at the bottom end.

Blue hour is when it comes together. The arcade lamps and the café fronts come on while the sky is still holding colour, the pale facades take the warm artificial light, and the wet or polished paving doubles everything. Sunset itself is worth walking the fifty metres to the waterfront for, since the square opens west across the bay towards Mount Olympus, visible on clear winter days.

Practical: it is public, free, open at all hours and never closed for anything except the occasional concert or political rally — check whether the square is staged for an event on the date, because when it is, it is unusable. Café tables fill the arcade edges from mid-morning; the empty, symmetrical version of the square exists only very early. Traffic runs along the seafront end, so mind the crossing when working the axis.
