Venetian harbour and the Egyptian lighthouse
A tiny oval harbour ringed by old facades with a stone lighthouse at its mouth — Rethymno's postcard, empty at dawn and lamplit at blue hour.
About Venetian harbour and the Egyptian lighthouse
Get directionsRethymno's old harbour is a pocket version of Chania's — a tight oval of water enclosed by tall Venetian-era facades, fishing boats on the quay, and the sixteen-metre stone lighthouse, built during the island's Egyptian period, standing at the end of the short mole. Its smallness is the gift: one slow lap covers every angle, and the lighthouse anchors frames from anywhere on the quay.
By mid-morning the entire quay is taverna seating and stays that way until midnight, so the two working windows are the edges of the day. Dawn gives empty stone, glassy water and fishermen for scale; blue hour gives the lamps, the lit facades doubling in the harbour, and diners as warm background rather than foreground clutter. Between the two, the old town behind — Ottoman balconies, Venetian doorways, the minaret of the Neratze mosque — carries the middle of a session.
The mole to the lighthouse is a two-minute walk on uneven stone; on a north swell it takes spray, which is the standard Cretan trade of hazard for drama. Reflections need still water — check the wind before promising the mirror shot.
Best time to shoot
Dawn for empty quays; blue hour for the lamps and lit facades
Tips
The quay becomes wall-to-wall taverna tables by mid-morning — work the edges of the day. Mind the uneven stone on the mole, and check the wind if reflections are promised.
