Fortezza fortress
A star fort crowning the town's headland — long walls, a domed mosque and sea horizons, with the late sun laid along the ramparts.
About Fortezza fortress
Get directionsThe Fortezza is the huge Venetian citadel on the low hill where ancient Rethymno stood, built after corsair raids in the sixteenth century and never seriously bettered. Inside the gate the space opens out: long grassed ramparts, bastion after bastion over the sea, and at the centre the broad dome of the Sultan Ibrahim mosque, one of the cleanest geometric backdrops on Crete.
Late afternoon is the fort's hour. The low sun lays along the western walls, the stone goes honey-coloured, and the bastions give elevated frames over the town's rooftops one way and open Aegean the other. The site is big enough that even in season a session finds empty ramparts — walk away from the gate and the crowd stays behind.
Two practicalities: it is a ticketed site with posted closing hours that move with the season, so check the same day whether the sunset itself falls inside them rather than assuming; and the ground is old fort ground throughout — grass, rubble and rampart edges without railings in places, which means flat shoes and a photographer who keeps the couple a step back from the drops. The exterior walls, seen from the harbour side below, fill the frame for anyone who arrives after closing.

Tips
Closing time moves with the season — confirm the day of the shoot whether sunset falls inside it. Rampart edges are unrailed in places: keep a step of margin.
