Get directionsTsagarada is not one village but four hamlets strung along the eastern slope, each with its own square. The one people come for is Agia Paraskevi, where a plane tree of enormous age — its trunk takes several people to reach around — stands in the middle of a stone-flagged terrace, with the little church behind and café tables ringing the base.
The tree is the picture. In leaf, from May to October, it roofs the whole square in green and turns the light soft and even, which is unusual anywhere in Greece and very forgiving for portraits. In winter, bare, it becomes a huge grey structure of branches against the sky — harder light, stronger graphics.
From the edge of the terrace the ground falls away through chestnut and beech woods to the sea, so a step to one side swaps the green canopy for a long blue view. Ten minutes below, old stone kalderimia and arched bridges cross the ravines — the Tsagarada bridge is a short detour and worth it.
The square is small and belongs to the cafés; on summer evenings every table is taken. Mornings are quiet. Take something with a bit of colour: under a plane tree in full leaf, everything goes slightly green.
