Halki and the Tragea valley
The island's old capital in an inland sea of olive groves — neoclassical facades, a citron distillery and plane-tree shade, with almost nobody in the frame.
About Halki and the Tragea valley
Get directionsHalki was the capital of Naxos when pirates made the coast unlivable, and it kept the architecture to prove it: neoclassical merchant houses in faded ochre and cream, shuttered balconies, marble doorsteps, all gathered around a couple of plane-shaded lanes in the middle of the Tragea olive valley. It is the interior of the island that most visitors never see, and it photographs like a film set that happens to be real.
Morning is the working window — soft light down the lanes, the café tables just opening, and the village essentially yours before the island-tour minibuses pass through late morning. The Vallindras citron distillery, in the same family since the nineteenth century, anchors the village: its worn lettering and copper stills make interiors and doorway frames worth asking politely for.
Give the second hour to the valley itself. Byzantine chapels sit scattered through the olive groves within a few minutes' drive, and the road between Halki and Filoti runs under old trees past stone field walls — pull-over territory for frames with real Naxos depth behind the couple. Flat shoes; the lanes are marble and cobble throughout.
Best time to shoot
Morning, before the island tours pass through
Tips
Ask before shooting inside the distillery — politely done, it usually works. The lanes are marble underfoot: flat shoes.
