Kastraki village beneath the pillars at first light

Kastraki sits at the foot of the Meteora rocks, so close that the pillars rise straight out of the back gardens. It is the older and quieter of the two villages below the monasteries: red tiled roofs, vine canopies over courtyards, stone lanes climbing towards the base of the towers, and a small square with plane trees. Where the viewpoints above give you monasteries in the sky, Kastraki gives you the scale of the rock measured against something human.

That contrast is the picture. A couple on a village lane with a three-hundred-metre stone tower filling the frame behind them says more about Meteora than any wide landscape does, and the roofs, walls and vines keep the foreground warm and inhabited rather than empty. Walk up towards the Doupiani chapel at the village edge and the rocks close in on three sides.

First light is when it works. The rocks face east here and go from grey to gold within minutes of sunrise while the village below is still in shadow, which separates subject from background without any effort. Later the sun rises over the pillars and the village falls into their shade for much of the morning; late afternoon warms the rock again but backlights it from the village side. In autumn the vines turn and the light is clean; winter mist sitting in the valley between the pillars is the strongest weather of all.

Practical: this is a working village, not a viewpoint — keep to the lanes, keep out of courtyards and keep the noise down at dawn. Parking is easy at the edges and everything is walkable. Wear flat shoes for the stone, and remember that the monasteries above have dress rules and their own opening days, so a village session is often what actually fits the schedule.
