Photo spot in Mani
Cape Tainaron lighthouse
The southernmost point of mainland Greece: a squat stone lighthouse at the end of a forty-minute path, with sea on three sides.
About Cape Tainaron lighthouse
Get directionsThe road down the Mani ends at a small car park above Vathia and Porto Kagio, and from there the last of Greece is on foot. The path runs forty minutes over old stone, past the mosaic floor of a Roman house and the ruins of a sanctuary of Poseidon, and ends at a low nineteenth-century lighthouse on a bare finger of rock with the Ionian on one side, the Aegean on the other and nothing to the south until Africa.
The pictures are about emptiness and edge. Shoot the couple small against the ridge on the way out, use the lighthouse as a single vertical against sky, and turn back from the tip for the whole peninsula receding in ridges. The mosaic and the ruined chapel near the start give texture if the wide shots start repeating.
Go late in the day and allow ninety minutes for the round trip plus shooting time; there is no shade, no water and no lighting, so a sunset here means walking back in the dark with a torch. The wind is the other constraint — the cape is exposed on all sides and can be strong enough to make the last section uncomfortable. Check the forecast, and skip it in a meltemi.
Best time to shoot
The two hours before sunset, allowing ninety minutes for the walk both ways
Tips
Forty minutes each way over rough stone: proper shoes, water, and a torch if you stay for sunset. No shade at any point. The cape is fully exposed — check the wind before committing, and turn back if it is strong.
