About Syros
Syros is the administrative capital of the Cyclades and a working town rather than a resort, which is why it stays lived-in all year and why a session here rarely competes with anyone. Ermoupoli was built by refugee shipowners in the 1820s and looks it: Miaouli Square is an expanse of marble paving in front of a neoclassical town hall by Ernst Ziller, with palms, a bandstand and, a minute away, the Apollon Theatre — an 1864 opera house modelled on La Scala. Behind the square, the Vaporia quarter falls straight into the water: pastel mansions with iron balconies stand on the rock and the blue-domed church of Agios Nikolaos looks down on swimmers using the ledges as a beach. Above everything, medieval Ano Syros climbs in stepped lanes to a Catholic cathedral, twenty minutes of stairs each way. Galissas, on the west coast, supplies sand and tamarisk trees when a shoot needs a beach.

Top Photo Spots in Syros
The most photogenic locations for your Syros photoshoot
Miaouli Square and the Apollon Theatre
An expanse of marble paving in front of a neoclassical town hall, with palms, a bandstand and a miniature opera house a minute away.
Best time: The last two hours of daylight, then blue hour once the town hall is lit
Skip midday: the marble glares and lights faces from below. The theatre interior needs permission and a ticket — the square outside needs neither. Weekday evenings are calmer than weekends, when the whole town walks here.
Vaporia and Agios Nikolaos
Pastel captains' houses standing straight out of the sea, with a blue-domed church above and swimming ledges instead of a beach.
Best time: Sunrise, while the east-facing facades take colour and the water is still flat
The swimming ledges have no railings and the wet rock is slippery — shoes on until you are in position. Evening puts the whole quarter in shade; if you want Vaporia lit, it has to be early. Voices carry into open windows, so keep it quiet.
The stepped lanes of Ano Syros
A medieval Catholic hill town of vaulted passages and stone stairs, climbing to a cathedral with the whole island underneath.
Best time: Late afternoon, when the west side is lit and the climb is bearable
It is twenty minutes of continuous stairs; there is an upper car park if that does not suit. Flat shoes only. This is a lived-in village, not a monument — keep doorways clear and voices down, and ask before photographing anyone's house up close.
Galissas beach and its tamarisks
The island's sheltered sandy bay, with a line of tamarisk trees for shade and a chapel on the headland at its northern end.
Best time: The hour before sunset, when the west-facing bay takes colour and the tamarisks go to silhouette
Use the tamarisk shade before six — the open sand is unforgiving at midday. Parking behind the beach is free but fills in August. The path over the headland to the next cove takes ten minutes and is much quieter.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a photoshoot on Syros cost?
Professional photoshoots on Syros start from €279. Packages differ by duration and the number of edited photos — one to two hours, roughly €279 to €450, covers Miaouli Square, the marble streets around it and Vaporia, all within walking distance. Add time if you want the stepped lanes of Ano Syros or a beach at Galissas in the same session.
What are the best photo spots on Syros?
Miaouli Square, with its marble paving, palms and the neoclassical town hall, is the signature frame, and the Apollon Theatre stands a minute away. Vaporia gives pastel mansions straight above the water and the blue-domed church of Agios Nikolaos. Ano Syros supplies stepped lanes and archways, and Galissas a sandy beach with tamarisks for a softer, barefoot ending.
What is the best time of day and season on Syros?
Vaporia faces east and is at its best just after sunrise, when the sea below it is still glassy. Miaouli Square works in the late afternoon, once the marble stops glaring, and again at blue hour with the town hall lit. Ano Syros takes the sunset. Syros is a year-round town, but April to June and September to October give the kindest light.
Can we photograph inside the Apollon Theatre or the Ano Syros churches?
The Apollon is a working municipal theatre with set visiting hours and a small admission, and photo sessions inside are arranged case by case — check with the theatre before you plan a shoot around it. The churches of Ano Syros welcome visitors but ask for quiet and modest dress. Outside, the square, the marble streets and Vaporia are public and free.
Is the studio rental included in the price?
It depends on the photographer, and their Photo Greece profile states it explicitly — read the package description before booking. Photographers with their own studios include the space in the session price; those who rent third-party studios either build the cost in or list it as a separate line so you can choose the space tier. When comparing prices, compare the whole package: a session that looks €50 cheaper but adds studio rental on top isn't cheaper. If a quote is ambiguous, ask directly in the booking chat — 'is the studio included, and which studio is it?' — and you'll get a concrete answer with photos of the space. Address and access details arrive with your booking confirmation.
How many outfit changes are included?
The practical limit is time, not a rule: in a 60-minute studio session, two to three outfits is the sweet spot — each change costs five minutes plus a lighting adjustment, and more changes than that eat into actual shooting. For headshot sessions, bring three tops in different tones against the planned backdrop and change only from the waist up in seconds. Portfolio and branding sessions that genuinely need four or more looks should book 90 minutes or two hours; your photographer will say so honestly when you describe the goal. Studio tip: bring everything pressed and on hangers, arrive in the simplest look, and start with it — the first fifteen minutes are warm-up frames anyway, and your strongest outfit deserves your warmed-up confidence.
