Miaouli Square, with its marble paving, palms and the neoclassical town hall, is the signature frame, and the Apollon Theatre stands a minute away. Vaporia gives pastel mansions straight above the water and the blue-domed church of Agios Nikolaos. Ano Syros supplies stepped lanes and archways, and Galissas a sandy beach with tamarisks for a softer, barefoot ending.

Vaporia faces east and is at its best just after sunrise, when the sea below it is still glassy. Miaouli Square works in the late afternoon, once the marble stops glaring, and again at blue hour with the town hall lit. Ano Syros takes the sunset. Syros is a year-round town, but April to June and September to October give the kindest light.

The Apollon is a working municipal theatre with set visiting hours and a small admission, and photo sessions inside are arranged case by case — check with the theatre before you plan a shoot around it. The churches of Ano Syros welcome visitors but ask for quiet and modest dress. Outside, the square, the marble streets and Vaporia are public and free.

Every age works — the format just adapts. First and second birthdays are cake-smash territory: short sessions, morning light, a washable location like a beach, and parents nearby with wipes and a spare outfit. Ages three to six shine in adventure formats, where the shoot is disguised as a game and the photographer is just the funny grown-up with a camera. School-age kids often love being the star of a 'magazine shoot' — give them small missions and they deliver poses you couldn't direct if you tried. From around ten, involve them in planning: kids who chose the location and their outfit cooperate at triple the rate. Then the photographer stops asking for poses — that's the entire trick. Kids-specialist photographers open sessions by not photographing at all: five minutes of showing the camera, letting the child press the shutter, becoming the least threatening adult present. Then the shoot becomes a game with rules the child controls — hide behind the wall and pop out, race me to that boat, show me your monster face. Shyness reads as delicacy in photos when nobody forces eye contact with the lens; some of the most beautiful kids' portraits are of a child absorbed in shell-collecting, unaware of the camera. Parents help most by being relaxed themselves and letting the photographer set the rhythm. The 'won't pose' kid usually refuses to leave when the session ends.
