Best time: The last two hours of daylight, then blue hour once the town hall is lit
Skip midday: the marble glares and lights faces from below. The theatre interior needs permission and a ticket — the square outside needs neither. Weekday evenings are calmer than weekends, when the whole town walks here.
Vaporia and Agios Nikolaos
Pastel captains' houses standing straight out of the sea, with a blue-domed church above and swimming ledges instead of a beach.
Best time: Sunrise, while the east-facing facades take colour and the water is still flat
The swimming ledges have no railings and the wet rock is slippery — shoes on until you are in position. Evening puts the whole quarter in shade; if you want Vaporia lit, it has to be early. Voices carry into open windows, so keep it quiet.
The stepped lanes of Ano Syros
A medieval Catholic hill town of vaulted passages and stone stairs, climbing to a cathedral with the whole island underneath.
Best time: Late afternoon, when the west side is lit and the climb is bearable
It is twenty minutes of continuous stairs; there is an upper car park if that does not suit. Flat shoes only. This is a lived-in village, not a monument — keep doorways clear and voices down, and ask before photographing anyone's house up close.
Galissas beach and its tamarisks
The island's sheltered sandy bay, with a line of tamarisk trees for shade and a chapel on the headland at its northern end.
Best time: The hour before sunset, when the west-facing bay takes colour and the tamarisks go to silhouette
Use the tamarisk shade before six — the open sand is unforgiving at midday. Parking behind the beach is free but fills in August. The path over the headland to the next cove takes ten minutes and is much quieter.
