First light or the hour before sunset. Chora is a maze of narrow lanes, so at midday it is either hard shade or blown-out white, while low sun runs along the alleys and warms the plaster. The monastery hill takes the last light beautifully. Cruise passengers move through Chora in the middle of the day, and the season runs from May to October.

The monastery and the Cave of the Apocalypse are working religious sites inside a UNESCO listing, and photography indoors is restricted — check on the day and expect a no in the church and the cave itself.
