Naxos: the Portara, twice

Naxos opens with its best frame before you have left the port. The Portara — a six-metre marble doorway to a temple of Apollo that was never finished — stands alone on its islet at the harbour mouth, reached by a short causeway. It gives you two completely different sessions:

• Sunset, with the town. The whole of Naxos Town strolls out to the islet in the evening, and it still works: the door frames the burning sky, silhouettes compose themselves inside the marble posts, and the mood is festive rather than crowded. Good for frames with life in them.
• Sunrise, alone. Come at first light and the islet is yours. The door frames a pink east sky, the town behind glows, and a couple has the most recognisable monument in the Cyclades as a private studio. Naxos: the Kastro and the lanes that stay cool

Behind the port, the old town climbs into the Kastro, the Venetian citadel — arched passages, coats of arms over doorways, marble steps polished by centuries. The lanes are narrow enough to stay shaded and quiet at almost any hour, which makes the Kastro the island's answer to the midday problem: when the beaches are white-hot and the light is vertical, this is where a session keeps working. Wear one strong colour; the stone runs pale gold and swallows pastels.

Half an hour inland, the marble lanes of Halki and the mountain villages around it give a Greece most visitors never photograph — plane-tree squares, citrus courtyards, old distilleries. Worth the drive for couples on a second session, or for anyone who wants frames that do not look like a screensaver.

Naxos: the west-coast beaches, built for families

Agios Prokopios and Plaka run for kilometres of sand backed by dunes and cedars rather than beach bars. The water goes shallow a long way out, the sand holds no surprises, and a family session here needs no plan beyond 'walk, play, follow the light'. Golden hour lands on the sand from the seaward side; in July and August the afternoon meltemi can whip the beach, so families with small children should aim for morning, when the water is calm and glassy.

Paros: Naousa, the harbour that does the work

Across the strait — ferries take about thirty to forty-five minutes — Paros anchors its photography in one perfect location. Naousa's fishing harbour is the classic Cyclades compressed into two hundred metres: a half-ruined Venetian kastro at the end of a stone pier, fishing boats in primary colours, octopus drying on lines, and cafés whose lights reach across the water after dark.

The session that works is a double bill: golden hour on the pier and around the kastro, then blue hour among the boats as the café lights come on. The whole sequence happens within a five-minute walk, which is why Naousa is the single most efficient couples' location in the Cyclades — no logistics, all light. Book dinner at the harbour afterwards and the evening plans itself.

Paros: Kolymbithres, Lefkes and Parikia

• Kolymbithres, across the bay from Naousa, is a beach broken into coves by smooth granite boulders sculpted into waves and hollows. The rocks are natural frames — couples stand in the gaps, children climb the low ones — and late afternoon light turns the granite honey-coloured. It also breaks the wind, which matters in meltemi season.
• Lefkes, in the hills, is marble lanes, amphitheatre views and no traffic — the village session for couples who have done their harbour evening and want green in the frame.
• Parikia's old town winds under bougainvillea behind the port: quieter than Naousa, best in the morning, and the right place to be while waiting for an afternoon ferry.

Two islands, one trip
