Halkidiki & Thessaloniki: The Northern Greece Photo Guide (2026)
The postcards stop at the Cyclades, and that is the north's advantage. Thessaloniki and Halkidiki — the seafront city and the three green peninsulas an hour south of it — deliver two kinds of photography the islands cannot: a city with life in every frame, and beaches where pine forest runs to the waterline and the horizon holds a holy mountain. Thessaloniki: the city that walks its waterfront
Thessaloniki's session is the waterfront, and the hour is dusk. The Nea Paralia promenade runs five kilometres along the Thermaic Gulf, past the White Tower to Zongolopoulos's Umbrellas — the sculpture that turns into pure silhouette frames as the sun drops over the bay. The whole city comes out to walk at that hour: couples, skaters, grandmothers, dogs. Do not wait for the promenade to empty; it never does, and the photographs are better for it. This is the city for couples' sessions with life in the frame rather than monuments alone.
The sequence that works: start at the White Tower forty minutes before sunset, walk south-east along the water as the light warms, and be at the Umbrellas when the sky peaks — silhouettes inside the steel curves, the gulf burning behind. Blue hour follows on the same spot as the installation lights come on.
Ano Poli: the town above the town
Uphill from the waterfront, Ano Poli is the Thessaloniki that survived the fire of 1917: Ottoman houses with timber overhangs, stepped lanes, and the Byzantine walls running along the top of it all. The classic frame is from the Trigonion tower at sunset — the whole city tumbling downhill to the bay, roofs going amber, the gulf silver behind. Come up an hour before sunset, shoot the lanes on the way — laundry lines, painted doors, cats on warm stone — and let the wall view be the finale. The climb is honest exercise; taxis exist and nobody judges.
Down in the flat city, three more layers wait: Ladadika's painted warehouses give colour and café life for morning sessions; the Rotunda and the Arch of Galerius anchor the Roman layer; and the market halls around Modiano shoot like documentary all morning — fish on ice, pyramid stacks of olives, vendors who have run the same stall for forty years. Thessaloniki is Greece's most photogenic food city, and a market-and-café morning session is the honest alternative to another monument.

Halkidiki: which peninsula, answered honestly
Halkidiki hangs off the coast in three fingers, and photographically they are not equal. Kassandra, the first, is the developed one — resorts, beach bars, nightlife; fine for holidays, ordinary for photographs. Athos, the third, is the monastic republic: closed to casual visits, but decisive for photography anyway, because its holy mountain stands on the horizon of every east-facing beach on the middle finger. Which leaves Sithonia — the second peninsula, where the pictures are.
Sithonia's greatest hits, north to south:
- Vourvourou — a bay so flat and shallow it reads as a lagoon, with pine islets scattered offshore. Morning glass, turquoise over white sand, and the easiest family sessions in northern Greece: children wade, parents relax, the water does the styling.
- Kavourotrypes — sculpted orange rocks breaking the coast into a dozen small coves, smooth granite against pine green and clear water. The rocks frame couples the way Paros's Kolymbithres does, with a fraction of the visitors.
- Kalogria and the west-coast sands — white sand against pines, facing west for golden hour and sunset sessions.
The light rule for the whole peninsula: sunrise on the east shores, sunset on the west, and open pine shade all day in between — which is why Sithonia works for families with small children when the Cyclades, all glare and wind, do not.
The Athos horizon
Sithonia's east coast looks across the water to Mount Athos, rising over two thousand metres straight from the sea. At dusk the mountain turns violet, and a sunset session on an east-facing beach gets a horizon nobody expects Greece to have — a holy mountain instead of an empty sea line. It is the north's signature frame for honeymoon couples: quiet beach, warm light, and that silhouette. No island can offer it.
