Elounda: the bay the five-star hotels chose

Elounda faces the Gulf of Mirabello, a bay sheltered enough that the water is usually flat when the north coast is not. That shelter is the reason a fishing village turned into a resort strip, and it is also the practical reason honeymoon photographs work here: calm water reflects, and reflected light is kind.

Two things are worth knowing before you plan. First, most of the big hotels sit on private waterfront with their own jetties and coves — beautiful, and usually the easiest place to start a session, but hotels set their own rules about outside photographers, so check with the concierge before you book a slot. Second, the public shoreline around the village and along the road north is genuinely good: low rocks, moored boats, the long view across the gulf to the mountains behind. The light here is a morning and late-afternoon business. Mirabello opens to the north-east, so first light comes across the water — the honeymoon frame most couples actually want — and the last hour goes warm and soft against the hills rather than dropping into a blazing sea sunset. Lake Voulismeni, and the town after dark

Agios Nikolaos is built around Lake Voulismeni, a small, almost perfectly round lake joined to the harbour by a short channel, ringed with tavernas and backed by a cliff. It is an unusual thing to have in the middle of a town and it photographs two ways:

• At dawn, the water is still enough to double the whole scene — cliff, boats, coloured facades, the lot. The town is asleep, the channel is empty, and you can work the full circle in twenty minutes.
• After dark, the tavernas light up and the lake becomes a bowl of reflections. Blue hour here is short but exceptional, and it is the easiest anniversary or honeymoon frame on this coast that needs no travel at all.

Beyond the lake the town gives you the harbour, the marina, and a walkable stretch of coast road towards the small beaches south of the centre. It is a real working town rather than a resort, which is why sessions here look lived-in instead of staged.

Olous, the causeway and the shallows

Between Elounda and the Kolokytha peninsula lies Olous — a sunken ancient city, where a low causeway crosses shallows clear enough to see the old walls through the water. It is a five-minute drive from Elounda's square, there is no gate and no ticket for the causeway itself, and the light late in the afternoon turns the shallow water pale green.

This is the spot for the barefoot, hem-in-the-water photograph that honeymoon galleries are built on. Nearby, the old salt-pan windmills stand in a line along the flats — ruined, stone, and photogenic in exactly the way ruined stone is at golden hour. Bring shoes that survive gravel and water: the causeway is short but rough.

Spinalonga, across the channel

Spinalonga is the Venetian fortress island in the mouth of the bay, later the last leper colony in Europe, and it is ten minutes by boat from the village of Plaka. It is a ticketed archaeological site with posted opening hours, and rules on commercial photography inside vary — check before you plan anything around a landing.

In practice, most photographers do not. The better frame is from the Plaka shore, looking across the channel as the fortress walls turn gold in the last hour, with the boats crossing between. You get the island, the light and the water without a timetable, and Plaka's waterfront tavernas make an easy end to the session. This is also the closest thing eastern Crete has to a signature image, so if you take one photograph home, make it this one.

Timing, and how it fits a Crete trip

Heraklion airport is about an hour west, which makes Agios Nikolaos and Elounda the practical base for the eastern half of the island — closer than Heraklion itself for anyone staying on this coast, and a long drive from Chania at the far western end. Season matters more than most couples expect. May, June, September and October give you warm water, working ferries and light that is soft rather than white. July and August are hot, bright and busy, which pushes everything to the first and last hour of the day — perfectly workable, but the middle of the day is for the pool.
