Old town lanes and stairways
Venetian balconies, neoclassical colour and bougainvillea over stone stairs — the prettiest old town on the mainland, walked before the day-trippers arrive.
About Old town lanes and stairways
Get directionsNafplio was the first capital of modern Greece, and its old town wears every layer at once: Venetian arcades and balconies, Ottoman fountains, neoclassical facades in ochre, dusty rose and cream, and bougainvillea heavy over the stairways that climb toward the Akronafplia ridge. Syntagma Square — broad, marble-paved, framed by the old mosque and the arcaded museum front — anchors one end; the stepped side-lanes do the rest.
The stairways are the signature. The lanes rising south of Staikopoulou street stack stone steps, potted courtyards and cascading flowers into natural full-length frames, with the light dropping in sideways at the start and end of the day. Morning is decisively the window: Nafplio is the classic Athens day-trip, and by late morning on any weekend the lanes carry a steady stream — at eight they are cats, shutters and coffee smell.
Work it as a slow loop: Syntagma's open marble first, then Staikopoulou's awnings and tavernas setting up, then two or three stairways chosen for their flowers that month, ending at the upper lanes where the rooftops and the Bourtzi appear between buildings. Flat shoes for the steps; the marble square is slick when the café crews wash it down.
Best time to shoot
Morning before the day-trippers; weekends fill by late morning
Tips
The best stairways change with what is blooming — scout the day before. Syntagma's marble is slippery just after the morning wash-down.
