Koules fortress and the Venetian mole
The seafort at the harbour mouth and the long stone mole behind it — Heraklion's one unarguable photograph, best walked at first light or lit up at dusk.
About Koules fortress and the Venetian mole
Get directionsThe Koules is the square Venetian sea-fortress that has guarded Heraklion's harbour since the sixteenth century, its walls meeting the water with the winged Lion of St Mark still carved above the gate. Behind it the old mole runs a further half-kilometre into the bay — a broad stone walk with the open sea on one side, the fishing and ferry harbour on the other, and the city stacked up behind with mountains over its shoulder.
Dawn is the honest window: the mole belongs to anglers and joggers, the light comes up over the water, and the fortress stone goes warm while the city behind is still grey. Dusk is the glamour version — the Koules is floodlit, the harbour lights ladder across the water, and blue hour frames from the mole look back at fortress and city together.
The practical variable is the north wind. On a calm day the mole is a boulevard; on a hard northerly the outer side takes genuine spray and walking the seaward edge is a soaking, or the best drama of the session, depending on the brief. The fortress interior keeps museum hours with a small ticket — the photograph, in truth, is the exterior and the walk.
Best time to shoot
First light for an empty mole; dusk when the fortress is floodlit
Tips
Check the wind — a northerly sends spray over the mole's seaward edge. The best fortress frames are from partway down the mole, not from the quay.
