About Patmos
Patmos is organised around one hill. The monastery of Saint John the Theologian sits on the summit behind grey battlements, founded in 1088 and still a working community, and the whitewashed lanes of Chora spill down from its walls in a maze of vaulted passages, painted doors and sudden gaps that look straight out to the Aegean. Halfway down the road to the port is the Cave of the Apocalypse, the grotto where the Book of Revelation is said to have been dictated; the monastery, the cave and Chora together are a UNESCO World Heritage site. Skala, the harbour, is where every arrival lands — a low white waterfront of caiques and cafés that keeps working through the day. Psili Ammos, the island's sandy beach, is reached by boat from Skala or a walk over the hill. There is no airport, so the crowds stay lighter than in the rest of the Dodecanese, apart from the hours when a cruise ship is anchored off Skala.

Top Photo Spots in Patmos
The most photogenic locations for your Patmos photoshoot
The monastery of Saint John above Chora
Grey battlemented walls on the summit of the island, with the white roofs of Chora packed against them and the Aegean on three sides.
Best time: Late afternoon on the west side, or first light for empty lanes below the walls
Active monastery and UNESCO site: modest dress, restricted indoor photography, limited afternoon opening — check on the day. The climb from Skala is steep; take a taxi up and walk down.
Chora's white lanes
A maze of whitewashed alleys, vaulted passages and painted doors under the monastery walls, with sudden blue gaps out to the sea.
Best time: First light or the hour before sunset, when low sun runs along the alleys
Residential lanes, mostly car-free and easy to get lost in — go with someone who knows the route. Flat shoes for the steps, and avoid midday, when the whitewash blows out.
The Cave of the Apocalypse
A whitewashed monastery terrace built over the grotto where the Book of Revelation is said to have been dictated, halfway between Skala and Chora.
Best time: Late afternoon on the outside terraces, between tour groups
Religious site with limited hours and no photography inside the cave — check the day's opening. Modest dress required. Park below and climb the steps; there is no room to linger on the road.
Psili Ammos beach
The island's one stretch of real sand, at the southern end, reached by caique from Skala or a walk over the hill — tamarisks, dunes and one taverna.
Best time: Late afternoon, once the day boat has gone and the sand goes warm
No road to the beach: caique from Skala with a fixed return, or a twenty-minute walk from Diakofti over rough ground. One taverna, no shops — bring water and check the last boat.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a photoshoot in Patmos cost?
Professional photoshoots on Patmos start from €279. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos — one to two hours, roughly €279 to €450, covers Chora's lanes and the walls of the monastery, or the Skala waterfront at the end of the day. Psili Ammos or a stop at the Cave of the Apocalypse adds travel, so allow a longer session.
What are the best photo spots in Patmos?
Chora's vaulted white lanes and painted doors, the terrace and grey walls under the monastery of Saint John, the rooftops seen from the windmills on the ridge, the whitewashed courtyard at the Cave of the Apocalypse, the caique quay in Skala, and Psili Ammos, the sandy beach reached by boat from Skala or on foot over the hill.
What is the best time of day for photos in Patmos?
First light or the hour before sunset. Chora is a maze of narrow lanes, so at midday it is either hard shade or blown-out white, while low sun runs along the alleys and warms the plaster. The monastery hill takes the last light beautifully. Cruise passengers move through Chora in the middle of the day, and the season runs from May to October.
Can we be photographed inside the monastery of Saint John?
The monastery and the Cave of the Apocalypse are working religious sites inside a UNESCO listing, and photography indoors is restricted — check on the day and expect a no in the church and the cave itself. Modest dress is required at both. The outer courtyards, the grey walls and the lanes of Chora immediately below are open, and that is where the pictures are anyway.
What's the best age for a kids birthday photoshoot?
Every age works — the format just adapts. First and second birthdays are cake-smash territory: short sessions, morning light, a washable location like a beach, and parents nearby with wipes and a spare outfit. Ages three to six shine in adventure formats, where the shoot is disguised as a game and the photographer is just the funny grown-up with a camera. School-age kids often love being the star of a 'magazine shoot' — give them small missions and they deliver poses you couldn't direct if you tried. From around ten, involve them in planning: kids who chose the location and their outfit cooperate at triple the rate. Whatever the age, schedule around meals and naps, and tell your Photo Greece photographer about your child's current obsessions — a dinosaur fan photographs differently from a mermaid expert.
What if my child is shy or doesn't want to pose?
Then the photographer stops asking for poses — that's the entire trick. Kids-specialist photographers open sessions by not photographing at all: five minutes of showing the camera, letting the child press the shutter, becoming the least threatening adult present. Then the shoot becomes a game with rules the child controls — hide behind the wall and pop out, race me to that boat, show me your monster face. Shyness reads as delicacy in photos when nobody forces eye contact with the lens; some of the most beautiful kids' portraits are of a child absorbed in shell-collecting, unaware of the camera. Parents help most by being relaxed themselves and letting the photographer set the rhythm. The 'won't pose' kid usually refuses to leave when the session ends.
