The Koules fortress guarding the Venetian harbour, the Morosini fountain with its stone lions on Lions Square, the neoclassical facades of 25th of August Street, the great Venetian walls with sea views from the ramparts, and the fishing boats along the old port — with the coves of Agia Pelagia a short drive west.

Early morning on the harbour mole out to Koules, when the light is low over the water and the walkway is almost empty. The old centre photographs best before the shops open; golden hour suits the sea walls and the waterfront. In summer an early start also avoids the strongest heat.

Knossos is minutes from the city, and visiting with your own camera is no problem — but organised photoshoots inside archaeological sites follow their own permit rules, so most sessions keep the styled portraits to the harbour, the old town and the walls, and treat Knossos as a sightseeing stop. Shyness reads as delicacy in photos when nobody forces eye contact with the lens; some of the most beautiful kids' portraits are of a child absorbed in shell-collecting, unaware of the camera.
