About Monemvasia
Monemvasia is a slab of rock a short causeway off the Laconian coast, and the causeway is the whole story: moni emvasia, single entrance, which is also the town's name. The lower town lives on the seaward side, invisible from land until you walk through the gate — stone lanes, bougainvillea, vaulted passages, and a main square where the Elkomenos Christos church faces a former mosque with the cliff standing over both. Cars stop outside the gate and luggage goes in on carts; nothing on wheels fits the lanes, so the frames come out clean of traffic. Above, a cobbled zigzag climbs twenty-odd minutes to the ruined upper town and Agia Sofia, a twelfth-century church on the cliff edge with nothing but air and sea beyond it. Because the town faces east, Monemvasia is one of the few places in Greece where the sun comes up straight out of the water in front of you, and the rock itself turns gold from the Gefyra side at the other end of the day. Athens is about four hours by road, so most couples arrive the night before.

Top Photo Spots in Monemvasia
The most photogenic locations for your Monemvasia photoshoot
The main square and Elkomenos Christos
A stone square in the lower town where a Byzantine church and its bell tower stand under two hundred metres of cliff.
Best time: Early morning, when the square is empty and in open shade
Busiest point in the lower town from mid-morning on — shoot it first. Active church: modest dress, and don't set up in a doorway during a service.
The sea walls and the Portello
The seaward rampart with a small door opening straight onto the rocks — and the rare Greek spot where the sun rises out of the water in front of you.
Best time: Sunrise, when the sun comes straight up out of the sea in front of the wall
The walls are in shadow by late afternoon — this is a morning frame. The rocks outside the Portello are wet and uneven, and take spray in a swell.
The vaulted lanes of the lower town
Stone alleys, arched passages and bougainvillea between the gate and the far wall, with no vehicle able to fit down any of them.
Best time: Any hour — the lanes hold shade all day; the ends open to sea light
Worn, sloping stone throughout: flat shoes under a long dress. Private homes and small hotels line the lanes — keep the setup compact and out of doorways.
Agia Sofia and the upper town
A twelfth-century church on the cliff edge above a ruined Byzantine town, twenty minutes up a cobbled zigzag from the lower gate.
Best time: Late morning or early afternoon, inside the site's opening hours
Twenty-plus minutes of steep cobbles with no shade — water and flat shoes. The site gates close well before sunset and hours shift with the season: check the same day. Unfenced cliff edge at the church.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a photoshoot in Monemvasia cost?
Professional photoshoots in Monemvasia start from €279. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos — from a short session in the lower town's lanes to a longer route taking in the sea walls, the main square and the climb to Agia Sofia.
What are the best photo spots in Monemvasia?
The main square, where the Elkomenos Christos church and its bell tower stand under the cliff, the vaulted stone lanes and bougainvillea between the gate and the far end of the lower town, the sea walls and the small Portello door that opens straight onto the rocks, the terrace of Panagia Chrysafitissa above the water, and Agia Sofia on the upper-town cliff edge. From the mainland at Gefyra, the whole rock fills the frame at sunset.
What is the best time of day for photos in Monemvasia?
Sunrise, which is unusual for Greece. The town sits on the eastern face of the rock, so the sun comes up out of the sea in front of the sea walls while the lanes are still empty — and by the same geometry the lower town falls into the shadow of its own cliff in the late afternoon. Save the end of the day for the causeway and the Gefyra side, where the rock itself turns gold. May, June, September and October are the kind months; the stone holds heat in August.
Is Monemvasia a good place for a wedding or an elopement?
It is one of the best in Greece for a small one. The lower town is car-free, walled and compact, so a whole day happens on foot between the gate, the square and the sea walls, and every backdrop is stone, sea and bougainvillea rather than modern building. The scale sets the guest list, though: the lanes are narrow, most venues are small hotels and terraces inside the walls, and luggage — like everything else — goes in on a handcart. Athens is about four hours by road, so guests arrive the day before. Ceremonies in the churches inside the walls need permission from the parish, and your photographer or planner should confirm the terms in writing well ahead.
Is the studio rental included in the price?
It depends on the photographer, and their Photo Greece profile states it explicitly — read the package description before booking. Photographers with their own studios include the space in the session price; those who rent third-party studios either build the cost in or list it as a separate line so you can choose the space tier. When comparing prices, compare the whole package: a session that looks €50 cheaper but adds studio rental on top isn't cheaper. If a quote is ambiguous, ask directly in the booking chat — 'is the studio included, and which studio is it?' — and you'll get a concrete answer with photos of the space. Address and access details arrive with your booking confirmation.
How many outfit changes are included?
The practical limit is time, not a rule: in a 60-minute studio session, two to three outfits is the sweet spot — each change costs five minutes plus a lighting adjustment, and more changes than that eat into actual shooting. For headshot sessions, bring three tops in different tones against the planned backdrop and change only from the waist up in seconds. Portfolio and branding sessions that genuinely need four or more looks should book 90 minutes or two hours; your photographer will say so honestly when you describe the goal. Studio tip: bring everything pressed and on hangers, arrive in the simplest look, and start with it — the first fifteen minutes are warm-up frames anyway, and your strongest outfit deserves your warmed-up confidence.
