Imerovigli caldera path and Skaros Rock

The caldera walk at the island's highest point — Oia's drama with a tenth of Oia's people, ending at a castle rock jutting into the void.

À propos Imerovigli caldera path and Skaros Rock

Itinéraire

Imerovigli sits at the top of the caldera curve, which means the view is wider than Oia's and the crowds thinner: this is where photographers who live on the island take their own couples. The path between Imerovigli and Firostefani is a continuous ledge of white hotels, blue pools and chapel domes with the cliff dropping away below, and almost any fifty-metre stretch of it composes.

Skaros Rock is the signature: a bare headland pushing out into the caldera, once a Venetian castle, reached by a fifteen-minute stepped path. Couples who walk out onto it get frames with six hundred feet of air on three sides; couples who stay on the main path get Skaros itself as the background, which is often the better photograph and always the easier walk.

Late afternoon into sunset is the right window — the caldera faces west, the light comes straight in off the sea, and the white town goes amber. The chapel of Theoskepasti, tucked below the path with its blue dome against the rock, is the quiet alternative to Oia's domes.

Conseils

Heels and the Skaros path do not mix — decide before setting out whether the shoot goes onto the rock or keeps it as backdrop.
