Street of the Knights and the old town

The Street of the Knights runs straight and slightly uphill for two hundred metres, walled on both sides by the 14th-century inns of the crusader tongues, ending at the Palace of the Grand Master. No shopfronts, no signage, hardly a modern surface — stand in the middle at the right hour and the photograph could be any century.

The right hour is early. By mid-morning in season the street carries a continuous file of cruise groups; at eight it is stone, arches and shadow. The low sun enters almost along the street's axis, raking the cobbles and lighting faces from the side — walk-towards-camera frames work all the way up.

Give the rest of the session to the old town around it: the arched lanes off Sokratous, the gates through the massive walls, the dry moat walk below them — a green corridor between sheer stone that almost nobody photographs. Cats are a guaranteed supporting cast.
