Bourtzi and the harbour promenade

The Bourtzi is Nafplio's improbable landmark: a small Venetian fortress filling its own islet a few hundred metres offshore, built to guard the harbour mouth and now simply sitting there being photographed. The waterfront promenade faces it head-on, and the frames assemble themselves — couple at the rail with the castle behind, fishing boats crossing the middle distance, the mountains of the gulf's far shore closing the composition.

Sunset is the hour. The promenade looks west, the light comes straight up the gulf, and the Bourtzi goes to silhouette on the burning water — the least effortful golden-hour location in the whole town, stroller- and grandmother-compatible, no climb anywhere. Blue hour keeps working as the town and the islet's own lights come on.

Extend it around the corner: the Arvanitia promenade rounds the Akronafplia peninsula from the harbour, a flat paved walk between cliff and sea with pines overhead — five quiet minutes from the café bustle and effectively a second location for free. Excursion boats shuttle to the islet itself in season for anyone who wants the reverse angle, castle walls in the foreground and the lit town behind.
