Portara — the Temple of Apollo gateway
A colossal marble doorframe standing alone on an islet off Naxos harbour — the island's front page, reached by a short causeway and unbeatable at sunset.
Sobre Portara — the Temple of Apollo gateway
Cómo llegarThe Portara is all that stands of a temple to Apollo begun in the sixth century BC and never finished: one doorway, six metres tall, of Naxian marble, alone on the low islet of Palatia at the harbour mouth. A stone causeway connects it to town, so the walk out is part of the session — sea on both sides, the Chora stacked white behind you.
Sunset is what the Portara does. The doorway faces roughly toward the setting sun, and the classic frame — couple silhouetted inside the marble frame with the sky burning through it — needs no explanation on the day. It also draws every visitor on the island: by the half-hour before sundown the islet carries a real crowd, so arrive early, work the frames that need the doorway first, then let the crowd become silhouettes on the rocks. Blue hour empties it fast, and the town lights across the water reward anyone who stays.
The islet is bare rock and the meltemi wind crosses it without mercy in July and August — secure hats, brief the dress. Morning is the contrarian choice: front-lit marble, empty causeway, and the doorway framing the white town instead of the sky.
Mejor momento para fotografiar
Sunset for the silhouette; morning for an empty causeway
Consejos
Arrive well before sundown — the doorway frames are contested. Stay through blue hour: the islet empties and the town lights come on across the water.
