Agia Sofia and the upper town
A twelfth-century church on the cliff edge above a ruined Byzantine town, twenty minutes up a cobbled zigzag from the lower gate.
Sobre Agia Sofia and the upper town
Cómo llegarThe upper town is what most visitors never see: a plateau on top of the rock covered in the roofless ruins of the Byzantine settlement, cisterns, and at its northern edge the church of Agia Sofia, standing right on the lip of a two-hundred-metre drop with nothing beyond it but air and the Aegean.
The climb is a cobbled zigzag from the lower town, twenty to twenty-five minutes at a normal pace, with no shade and a rough surface. That filter is why the top is usually quiet even when the square below is not, and why the frames up here are the emptiest in Monemvasia: church, sky, sea and ruins, and often nobody else at all.
It is an archaeological site with gates and posted hours that change with the season, and it closes well before sunset in most months — so the plan is late morning or early afternoon, and someone should check the day's hours rather than assume. The cliff edge is unfenced at Agia Sofia: keep a real margin, and do not put a couple's back to it for a shot.
