The sea walls and the Portello

The lower town's outer wall runs along the water for its whole length, and about halfway there is the Portello: a small arched door through the rampart that opens onto flat rock and a ladder into deep water. Locals swim from it. Outside the wall there is nothing between you and the open sea.

This is Monemvasia's signature light. The town sits on the eastern face of the rock, so the sun comes up out of the sea directly in front of the walls — a sunrise over water, which most of the Greek mainland cannot offer — and for twenty minutes the stone goes gold while the lanes behind are still asleep. The same geometry means the walls are in shadow by late afternoon, so this frame is a morning one or nothing.

The terrace of Panagia Chrysafitissa, a whitewashed church a minute along the wall, gives the same view with a foreground. The rocks outside the Portello are uneven and wet in places, and a swell breaks against them — flat shoes, and stay off them entirely if the sea is up.
