The Mirabello coast road viewpoints

Pull-offs on the road north from town where the whole gulf opens out — deep blue water, the peninsula and Spinalonga far below.

The road from Agios Nikolaos to Elounda climbs out of town and runs along the hillside above Mirabello Bay for about eleven kilometres, with several unmarked pull-offs where the ground falls away and the entire gulf opens up: the peninsula, the fortress island, and water that reads as three separate blues from height.

These are the wide frames of a session here — the ones that place the couple in the landscape rather than in a town — and they take almost no time, because the drive from the lake to Elounda is fifteen minutes and any of the stops is a two-minute pause. Late afternoon is the moment: the sun comes over the ridge behind the road and lights the whole bay, and the sea colour saturates as the angle drops.

The caveats are the obvious ones for a hillside road. The pull-offs are small, the traffic is fast and the drops beyond the edge are real, so the car goes fully off the tarmac, the couple stays well in from the lip, and nobody stands in the lane for a wider angle. There is no shade, and in July the hillside holds the heat until sunset.

Tips

Small pull-offs on a fast road with unfenced drops: park fully off the tarmac and keep back from the edge. No shade — this one is quick, not a long stop.
