Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion

The Riviera road ends at sixteen Doric columns on a headland over open sea — drive the coast in the afternoon and be standing here for the last light.

Sounion is the full stop at the end of the Athens Riviera: after an hour of coves and salt flats the road climbs a final headland and the temple appears on the skyline, sixty metres above open water with nothing behind it but islands. The columns take the low sun side-on, and because the site looks west over the sea, the sunset arrives unobstructed — no ridge, no city haze.

Work two angles: from inside the archaeological site with the sun dropping between the columns, and from the path below the south side, columns on the skyline and the couple on the pale rock beneath. The site closes at sundown, so golden hour falls inside opening hours — buy tickets before the pre-sunset queue forms, and know that the coach crowd thins fast once the sun is gone, leaving the dusk sky to the patient.

The headland wind is constant and honest: plan hair, dresses and any veil for movement, and treat it as a prop rather than an enemy. As a Riviera day, the sequence writes itself — Vouliagmeni or the Limanakia coves in the afternoon, Sounion for the last ninety minutes.

Tipps

Buy tickets before the golden-hour queue forms. The wind on the headland never really stops — brief outfits for movement.
